Triangle Pet Supply is a locally owned, family business. We love our
cats and dogs (our kids)! We currently live with an Aussie mix, a
Rottweiler, and 3 cats. They are all rescues that we have added to the
family as they
find us. Their health and happiness is of the utmost importance to us.
We know that this is how most pet owners feel about their pets but
understand that finding truly healthy food can be more difficult than
it should be. Just learning to read a food label can feel like a degree
program!
From working in pet stores to veterinary clinics, our
experience has been the same.. not many people in the pet care industry
focus on nutrition. Nutrition is such a core factor of good health, how
could it be this way? Many of the larger corporations making pet foods
focus much more on marketing than on quality ingredients. They also
sponsor the nutrition classes in veterinary schools. That way, the
people who you naturally turn to only know what the pet food company
wants them to, unless your vet takes a personal interest in learning
more than the standard.
We have spent the last few years researching pet food ingredients for
our own pets and are now applying that knowledge to the brands we
select and offer to our customers. We take this commitment very
seriously and thoroughly review every product we offer. We are here to
help you weed through the misinformation and marketing campaigns to
find healthy pet products. You may not recognize a lot of the
brands we carry because they don't advertise as heavily and are not
carried in the large, profit focused chain stores. If you would like
to
learn more about pet food ingredients, just visit our resources page.
While even nutritionists don't completely agree on what is appropriate
for pets and what is not, we feel there are some basic do's and don'ts
that guide our product selection.
The Do's and Don'ts
What we do offer in foods: What we don't offer in foods:
Named meat sources Corn, Wheat, Soy (allergens) Grain Free options Rice Protein Organics Animal digest or by-product Natural preservatives Glutens Minimal fillers BHA or BHT Exotic Proteins Sorbitol, Propylene Glycol
Variety to Support Quarterly Rotation Beet Pulp Menadione
The Grey Area:
There are a few commonly used ingredients that are of questionable
quality. There are also many products that are very good overall but
may contain one or two fillers. If we excluded every item on this list,
our selection would be very limited and rotating foods/protein sources
would be very difficult. We feel the items on this list are ok, just
not ideal, as long as only 1 or 2 is present in a given food and not in
every food you rotate throughout the year.
Tomato Pomace - by-product but touted as a good source of Lycopene. We would prefer whole, dried tomato or tomato paste.
Ocean/White Fish - unnamed fish
source raises questions of quality and concerns of Ethoxyquin use. We
prefer named fish, such as Salmon, and look for statements from the
manufacturer that they use Ethoxyquin free fish.
Poultry Fat - Unnamed source raises questions of quality. We prefer to see named fat source such as chicken fat.
Egg Product - We would prefer to see whole or dried eggs.
Potato Product - We would prefer to see whole or dried potatoes.
Brewers Rice - processed, low quality rice fragment. We prefer to see whole or ground rice.
